<image:title>Project - SITA - DISCOVERY & UX RESEARCH</image:title>
<image:caption>During the six-week UX research phase of the project, I spoke with scores of internal stakeholders and product end-users. My team and I even traveled to Istanbul and Mumbai to conduct an initial usability test and ethnographic field study of airline reservation agents. We were surprised to learn that reservations agents were resistant to an interface redesign that required them to use their mouse. However, once we observed them, we understood why. The speed and ease with which they can book even the most complex travel reservations using just their keyboard and a library of memorized shortcodes and quick commands were staggering. We realized we would need to design the interface to accommodate a nearly mouse-free use case.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - SITA - DEFINITION & CREATIVE DIRECTION</image:title>
<image:caption>After distilling the key findings from our discovery effort, I led the team through the process of defining the scope and parameters of the project. The output of this process is called Creative Direction. For me, the Creative Direction refers to the overall vision for a project, and seeks to answer the following questions: What product or service are we going to design and for who? How are we going to design it? What specific user requirements must we meet for the product or service to be a success? How will it look and feel when it’s done? Once the whole team approved and ratified the Creative Direction, it became the framework and the rule-set that we used to guide our decisions as we move into the Design Phase of the project. More than that, the Creative Direction became the yardstick by which we measured our design solutions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - SITA - THE LOTUS BLOSSOM</image:title>
<image:caption>This canvas, called a Lotus Blossom, is a powerful tool I use to collect relevant design precedents against a set of core design requirements. This helps us to know which of the core design requirements have already been solved and allows us to focus our ideation efforts towards the truly novel design problems within the project. No one likes reinventing the wheel…</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - SITA - SO MANY WIREFRAMES</image:title>
<image:caption>We used a combination of Sketch, InVision, and UXpin for wireframing and interactive prototyping. These grayscale wireframes were pretty short-lived as we quickly compiled a UI component library with which to design in later sprints. Our first attempt at wireframes included a substantial amount of dummy data and Lorem Ipsum placeholder. We found that many of the project stakeholders were distracted by the absence of valid data, even in the lowest fidelity wireframes. We realized that we would need to populate all of our wireframes with content that mapped to their mental models in order to effectively communicate the interface design.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e1529e812d45307393fdba4/1582680286022-KW0TOBTB35NQ4ABB9GWF/Screen+Shot+2020-02-25+at+5.24.24+PM.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Project - SITA - WIREFRAME UP CLOSE</image:title>
<image:caption>One of our biggest challenges was managing deliverables across several international timezones. Because we were collaborating with SITA’s development ops team located in Ireland and their developers located in India, we knew we needed to be extremely thorough with our documentation. We also wanted non-technical stakeholders to be able to refer to these wireframes free of the annotations. We designed these wireframes to allow stakeholders to toggle the annotations on and off so they could have a clear view of the interface designs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - SITA - ANIMATED PROTOTYPE</image:title>
<image:caption>We used a combination of InVision, Framer.js, and Adobe After Effects to create a range of animated and interactive prototypes throughout the project. Micro-interactions represented a significant evolution to the interface design for the Horizon platform. It was important that these animations do more than just decorate the experience. We used a thoughtful application of micro-interactions to let users know when something was happening in the background or to help them with wayfinding. In all cases, we wanted to ensure that animations were at the service of usability.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - SITA - INTERACTIVE PROTOTYPE</image:title>
<image:caption>We created and tested several interactive prototypes during each of our two-week design sprints. We benefitted from the input and feedback from a consortium of airline IT experts as well as a testing group of airline reservation agents, and eCommerce end-users.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - SITA - INTERNATIONALIZATION & LOCALIZATION</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the big design challenges of this project was accommodating seamless use by end-users all over the world. Our designs had to consider right-to-left and verbose language support. A common problem in multi-language support emerges when verbose languages like German cause layouts to break, especially in the mobile view. We had to implement a series of micro breakpoints to help mitigate this which required constant stress-testing of our interface designs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - SITA - DESIGN SYSTEM: CORE DESIGN PRINCIPLES</image:title>
<image:caption>A final phase of this project was to create a core design system that SITA could use for future project initiatives. We named the system Altitude. Altitude strived to be more than just a UI component library. We wanted to root all of those components in the design principles we defined in the early stages of the project. Altitude is a repository with knowledge-share for not just how to use components, but why to use them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These flow diagrams represent an evolution in our understanding of the platform’s system design requirements as well as the fidelity of the deliverable. Because we were collaborating so closely with the front-end and back-end developers from the very start, we piggy-backed the database object models they would need to implement the platform onto our UX flows. That’s what you call a cross-functional team!</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - NHL Bracket Challenge - Usability Testing</image:title>
<image:caption>It was important for us to test our initial Bracket creation designs with real users as quickly as possible. The NHL helped out by getting us into a few NY Islander games at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn. There, we were able to test with real fans during the intermissions between periods. Our first attempt at the mobile design for Bracket creation (not shown here) featured a bracket designed for the landscape view of a device. To us, this was an intuitive design choice because it naturally accommodated the shape of a sixteen-team tournament bracket. However, our first round of testing made it very clear that users were not interested in turning their devices to create a bracket. That insight informed the next iterations of the bracket design featuring these nested, expanding bracket columns.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - Mercer People Pro - FRAMING THE BUSINESS PROBLEM</image:title>
<image:caption>The Mercer Pocket Pro project kicked off with a day-long collaborative workshop designed to help us flesh out our collective assumptions about the platform’s end-users. We developed a set of personas for users on both the client and vendor sides of the marketplace platform. We also mapped the journey of those users through the various touchpoints of the experience as they sought to complete various tasks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - Mercer People Pro - A USER JOURNEY MAP</image:title>
<image:caption>An example of a User Journey Map. Here, we’re considering the steps involved with an initial Client/HR Pro consultation on the MPP platform…The typos were left in for posterity… Different designers use Journey Maps for different reasons. For me, they provide the best outcome from creating Journey Maps is to reveal the important touchpoints that a user will encounter as they move from one end of a task to the other. In this way, we start to get a sense of how the system architecture will need to be designed in order to accommodate the pathways between those touchpoints.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - Mercer People Pro - UX INTERACTION FLOW</image:title>
<image:caption>This interaction flow diagram is one of dozed that I mapped out in the system structure page of the project. This diagram describes how HR Pros register an account and submit themselves for access to the platform. Each of the blue nodes in this diagram indicates where the process is further described in its own flow diagram. For me, mapping the flow of a system is an important step in understanding how I’m going to organize the interactive spaces throughout an experience. This is often a moment that brings clarity into how many screens will need to be designed and how they will be interconnected.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - Mercer People Pro - WIREFRAME FROM THE EMPLOYEE SIDE OF THE PLATFORM</image:title>
<image:caption>This annotated wireframe describes the default state of the home dashboard for HR Pros on the platform. One of the central concerns we heard from potential early adopters was around the ability to easily manage their time. We designed this dashboard to bring their schedule front and center upon login.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - Mercer People Pro - WIREFRAME FROM THE EMPLOYER SIDE OF THE PLATFORM</image:title>
<image:caption>We learned from our discovery interviews with target end-users that the ability to schedule an initial consultation was going to be an essential ingredient in trust-building on a brand new hiring platform, even one created by Mercer. This wireframe describes how people are able to schedule an initial meeting with an HR Pro before deciding to hire them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - Mercer People Pro - MOBILE WIREFRAMES</image:title>
<image:caption>We uncovered a compelling mobile use-case during discovery. This was something that the product team at Mercer has initially overlooked in their project scope. This caused us to realign the priority for designs that were optimized for mobile and desktop use.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - Mercer People Pro - ART DIRECTION APPLIED</image:title>
<image:caption>It was important that MPP look and feel was inline with the larger Mercer branding. We took our visual design inspiration from their brand style guide. However, we also wanted the interface to have its own, more up-start visual identity. We did this by leveraging Mercer’s secondary and tertiary brand colors in lieu of their primary (more corporate) dark blue.</image:caption>

<image:title>Project - Mercer People Pro - ART DIRECTION APPLIED</image:title>
<image:caption>As with many projects, the aim of the visual design was for it to be clean, simple, and modern. For us, that was articulated through a flat design combined with good use of spacing, simple geometric shapes, a limited color palette, contrast, clarity, and an “only-what’s-needed” focus.</image:caption>
